Back in the Ring after 20 Years: Former Golden Gloves Boxer to Compete at Desert Showdown in Memory of His Trainer

INDIO, (July 15-19th)- At the 13th Annual World Amateur Boxing Championship, former amateur boxer David Waknine will step into the ring for the first time in 22 years. Waknine’s journey commemorates his former boxing coach whose life was recently cut short by bladder cancer, and is the subject of the upcoming documentary “One More Round”, produced by HFC Pictures and due for release in 2015. After training vigorously for three months with the help of his trainer and Strength and Conditioning coach Taylor Ramsdell from Chain Fitness, this New York Golden Gloves Finalist is taking the first step on the road to his first ever professional fight at the age of 45.

For hundreds of boxers across the country, the Desert Showdown marks the beginning of a dream come true. Many turn pro soon after the tournament, and in its short history, it has become the 2nd biggest amateur tournament in the country, behind only the New York Golden Gloves. Waknine’s amateur career ended soon after his final-round loss in that competition in 1993. Now, with help from health specialists, nutritionists, boxing trainers, psychologists, and a life coach, David is preparing to face the physical and mental obstacles of his journey in order to overcome his toughest opponent: himself.

Desert Showdown takes place July 15-19th, 2014 inside Fantasy Spring Resort Casino Special Events Center, located at 84-245 Indio Springs Dr. Indio CA, 92203.
